We are excited to preview some new things this year, and we look forward to serving your children both breakfast and lunch throughout the year. Here is a list of some of the things that we are working on this school year:
- Farm to school initiative-we are excited to venture into new partnerships with local farmers to feature some fresh fruits, vegetables and cheese during the first 3 months of this school year. We hope to be able to have a few guest appearances from these farmers to further educate children on the source of food.
- New menu items-we look forward to trying some new menu items with the students including unbreaded chicken sandwiches, Philly beef sandwiches, BBQ rib nibblers, garden burgers, mini-cheeseburgers, hummus and pita, and some ethnic menus.
- Ala carte options-we will continue to seek out foods for ala carte that meet the Action for Healthy Kids Minnesota guidelines when possible. This is an area that we will focus on continuous improvement, and purposeful change in the interest of providing some good alternatives to supplement our main menu.
- Facility improvements-we have purchased specific pieces of equipment both new and used for a few schools to enable them to serve the students more efficiently, and to increase food quality and freshness.
I look forward to being out in the schools over the meal periods to be able to experience the meals that your children get served on a daily basis, and to be able to see first hand how the students are reacting to some of our new products. We invite you to join your children for lunch or breakfast at any time. If you have any comments or questions, please call me at (507) 645-3432 or email me at pam.haupt@nfld.k12.mn.us.
Thanks again for giving us the opportunity to serve your family. We look forward to a great year.
Regards,
Pam Haupt, SNS

Meal Account Information
Parents are encouraged to use Family
Access to view meal account balances, payments and purchases. An online
application needs to be completed before reviewing your account.
Free and Reduced Meals
Free or reduced meals are available for children who qualify. If a family
qualifies for free or reduced meals, the appropriate form must be completed
annually and submitted to the Food Service District Office for review
and approval. Applications (English or en
Español ) for free or reduced meals are available
at each principal’s office, each school kitchen and are mailed to each household in August. If an application is needed in a different language, please contact the Food Service Office. Parents should
be advised that the Food Service District Office will make every effort
to review their application on a timely basis, however, it may take 7-10
days for an application to be reviewed and a response sent to the parents/guardian.
New applications must be submitted each year or when your income or number
of individuals in your household changes. Families receiving MFIP, Food
Stamps or FDPIR and enrolled in Northfield Public Schools by June 15 for
the following year will be directly certified by the State of Minnesota
to receive free meals and may not need to complete an application. Advance
payment will be required for any meals purchased prior to the approval
of the application. Angel Accounts
The district has established “angel accounts” at the elementary and middle schools. Angel accounts are funded by donations from parents, staff and/or community members. If a student has a negative meal account balance, students at elementary schools will have a regular lunch meal served to them 2 times per month with a maximum of 4 times per year from the Angel Account. Similarly, middle school students will receive a sack lunch. Beyond this, students will be offered a sandwich and milk at a cost of $0.75, which will be charged to their account. If a student qualifies for reduced price meals, $0.40 will be charged to their account.
Catering
The Food Service Department offers a variety of catered food and beverages
catering
services brochure for
most any event during the school year. We are a great choice to provide
breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack for any size group at a reasonable
cost. Please contact the Kitchen Manager at any school for available options
and prices (catering services brochure). We would be pleased to accommodate
your catering needs.
Employment Opportunities
The Food Service Department is always looking for individuals that enjoy
serving children and are willing to work in a clean, fast-paced, team-oriented
environment. Substitute positions are also available. This is an excellent
opportunity to have a flexible schedule and be at home when your children
are. Please contact the District
Food Service Office at (507) 663-0618,for more information.
Open Houses
A representative of the Food Service Department will be present at each
school open house. Free and reduced meal applications and menus
will be available. This is a great opportunity to make a payment for school
meals and to have questions answered.
