The Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2009-2010 school year at the March 23 meeting. The 174 student contact day calendar reflects current statute, which requires an after Labor Day start as well as the elimination of the current two-hour late start and early release days during the year; the elimination of end of trimester teacher work days; and the addition of one student contact day to the length of the calendar.

The board also approved a one-hour early release each Wednesday for Bridgewater, Greenvale Park and Sibley Elementary schools and a one-hour late start each Wednesday for the middle school and high school throughout the school year to facilitate the implementation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) for all teaching staff in every building. However buses will arrive and leave at the normal time, allowing students who take bus transportation from/to home or day care to arrive/leave at the regular time. Parents or day care providers who normally drop off/pick up students at the beginning/end of the regular day will be able to drop students off one hour later (middle school & high school) or pick students up one hour earlier (elementary schools). Parents or day care providers who must drop off/pick up students at the regular time would be able to drop students off or pick students up from supervised activities at the regular time. Special education students will arrive/leave on special buses shortly before school is opened/dismissed on the shortened day and will not be on the regular bus schedule.

The majority of the Board of Education believes embedding PLC time into the school day will significantly change how teachers work together to enhance instruction for all students and support increased student achievement. The board asked administration to provide periodic updates next school year so that the effectiveness of PLC time can be evaluated.
